Commentary
And when the absence of resurrection was due to a flaw in ability, they began to establish the completeness of ability in a way that indicates the truth of the Qur'an and its protection from the jinn, so that it would not be thought to be similar to what is with the soothsayers. They said, affirming in the reading of the broken form to distance the reaching to the heavens, urging the pursuit of important matters even if their place is far: ﴿And we﴾. And when it expressed the thoroughness in investigation by seeking, and the stripping of the action was greater than that to indicate ease and lack of burden, he said: ﴿We touched the heaven﴾, meaning the world, we sought its news as was our custom in listening to what entices a person, seeking is like the sense of touch with the hand. ﴿So we found it﴾ from all its aspects, and it is from finding. ﴿Filled﴾, meaning filled in the utmost ease and lightness for its doer. ﴿As guardians﴾, meaning guardians, a plural noun, so it is the singular of the term. And for this reason, it was described by his saying: ﴿Severe﴾, meaning the angels. ﴿And shooting stars﴾, the plural of shooting star, which is the one ignited from fire. Their aspirations rose until they sought worldly matters and carnal desires from a journey of five hundred years upward. So woe to one who is lazy about the important matters of religion that are realized from a journey of an hour or less, and to sit in the gathering of knowledge for an hour or less. And the expression of being filled indicates that it was [before that -] guarding, but not in [this -] manner. It was said: Indeed, it guarded for the descent of the Torah, then the guarding intensified for the Gospel, then it was filled for the descent of the Qur'an, and they were prevented from listening altogether except what the Qur'an confirms as a prelude to the greatest final prophethood, so that they would not fall into any kind of confusion.
