Commentary
And when one who calls his master and is devoted to him, working for the duty upon him that is suitable for his kind, is not denied nor is he surprising, rather it is surprising from one who calls someone other than his master or leans towards him with the slightest inclination, so he asks about the reason for it. He said, expressing amazement at the unjust among the jinn and mankind: ﴿And indeed﴾ meaning it was revealed to me or the jinn said to those who obeyed them from their people, recounting what they saw of his prayer ﷺ and the crowding of his companions around him, astonished by that, that the matter or the great and astonishing story ﴿when﴾ I stood, they were almost upon me - thus was the original, but he expressed it with 'the servant' as previously mentioned, that whoever calls his master, even if that master is the least of existing beings, would not do that. So how if his master is the Owner of the Kingdom and the King of Kings ﴿The servant of Allah stood﴾ meaning the servant of the Most High King who has all majesty and beauty, and there is no existence that is comparable to Him, but every existence is from the overflow of His grace ﴿calls upon him﴾ meaning (p-491) he calls his master with the supplication of worship from [where -] his being His servant and from the fact that his master hears whoever calls him and answers him.
And when the unjust are the majority of people [rather all people -] in that time, jinn and mankind, he said, clarifying that it is permissible for the prophets to be harmed and belittled, raising their ranks and comforting their heirs, even if their status rejects that.
﴿They were almost﴾ meaning the unjust were close to the two groups of jinn and mankind ﴿upon him﴾ meaning upon the servant of Allah ﴿a crowd﴾ meaning they were piled upon one another due to the intensity of their crowding until that became a natural state for them, astonished by what they saw from his worship and their desire to turn him away from that. And that is something that is not surprising, rather the surprise is what they did in their worship of others than Him, glorified and exalted is He, and from their astonishment at the worship of His servant to Him and his sincerity in his supplication. And it is a gathering of crowd - with a kasra on the lam, and it was read with a damma on the lam, a gathering of lubda with a damma, which is [what -] some of it piled upon another.
