Commentary

And when He, glorified and exalted is He, was desired and feared on the tongues of the jinn by what He guided them to and illuminated their hearts with, the previous verse was the last that was narrated about them. The meaning was: It was revealed to me that the unjust among my people and others, if they believed, Allah would do for them of good what He did for the believing jinn when they believed. So Allah enriched them in this world with His lawful provisions, freeing them from His unlawful provisions without any hardship. He clothed them with every bone they encountered with abundant flesh, and He restored to them every dung they saw in the best manner by the blessing of this noble Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him. And it was revealed to me that the great matter (p-487) 'If they were to be steadfast' means that the unjust among all of creation, both jinn and humans, sought the community and found it, existing 'on the path'—that is, the one and only path, which the jinn understood from the Qur'an, that of Islam and justice leading to success in both abodes. And when water was the origin of all good, as He, the Most High, said in the story of Noah, blessings and peace be upon him, 'He will send down the rain upon you in abundance' [Noah: 11], and from it is every living thing, and it was precious among the Arabs, He said, magnifying it by referring to the manifestation of greatness: 'We would have given them'—that is, We made for them from what we have of greatness 'abundant water'—that is, much, great, and greatly beneficial water, with which We increase the provision, beautify the earth, and enrich the livelihood.
