Commentary
And when they recognized that safety lies in adhering to the obedience of Allah, they alerted to the danger of exposing themselves to His wrath. They said: ﴿And as for the unjust﴾, meaning those entrenched in the attribute of injustice away from the truth, from the jinn and others, those have neglected themselves. They did not strive for it, so they preferred, and thus were distanced from the right path. They fell into the perils from which there is no escape: ﴿So they were﴾ by their nature ﴿for Hell﴾, meaning the distant fire whose depth meets them with scowling and hatred and frowning. ﴿Fuel﴾ by which the fire is kindled, and it is in a state of burning as long as they are alive. They are alive as long as it burns; they do not die to find rest, nor do they live to thrive. The verse is from the intertwining, and it is explicit regarding what it necessitates from the context, with no implied meaning: it mentioned striving first as evidence for abandoning it second, and it mentioned Hell second as evidence for omitting Paradise first. The secret of this is that they are in a state of intimidation, so they mentioned what is to be feared and concealed what must be known, for certainly Allah, glorified and exalted is He, does not waste the reward of anyone. Rather, He does not limit it to what corresponds to the good deed in common understanding, but it must be that He increases it by nine times, and with Him is more. There is no power and no strength for us except by Him, glorified and exalted is He.
