Commentary
And when they indicated their inability to overpower what they could manage of the command of the heavens by what they mentioned, and to overcome their corruptors with this Qur'an from much of what they used to do to the people of the earth, they were overpowered by this great Qur'an in reality from the horizons. So we prevented them and preserved it by it, and they indicated that they are the place of overpowering by division. This necessitated knowledge of the comprehensiveness of His power, glorified and exalted is He, so that no seeker can grasp it, nor can any fleeing one escape from it, for He displayed to them the matters of His greatness and power in guarding and otherwise. So He mentioned, glorified is He, what effect that had upon them of acknowledgment and submission to the One, the All-Prevailing. He said, narrating from them that as a lamentation to follow their example in knowing oneself with honor and humiliation, and weakness by division and discord, and knowing the Lord, glorified is He, with complete power, sovereignty, and greatness by the complete uniqueness that does not accept similarity or division: "And we" they confirmed for the assumption of man in their strength other than what it is for it. "We assumed" they released the assumption upon knowledge, indicating that the wise should avoid what may seem harmful, even if it is the slightest of tricks. So how if he is certain that the great affair, and they increased in confirmation of what had preceded, saying: "We will never be able to frustrate Allah," meaning to resist Him if He intends for us harm, for He has encompassed everything in knowledge and power, for He is One, there is none like Him. And they indicated the aspect of weakness by saying: "in the earth," meaning existing in it, residing in it, which is the direction of the bottom, bound to overpowering. And that is the utmost of our effort, so where are we from the vastness of His dominion, which is in His grasp? "And we will never be able to frustrate Him," meaning in any way. "By fleeing," meaning those who flee, or from the direction of fleeing, meaning we fled from the earth to elsewhere, for the heavens have prevented us, and we have no refuge except in His grasp. So where to? Where is the escape? And they have prevented thereby the two aspects of salvation: by meeting and victory, and fleeing at the time of overpowering.
