Commentary
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, informed [about the ease of] their faith, it was perhaps thought that this was only because their state was softness. He followed it with what he knows to be a miracle for his sake (blessings and peace be upon him), and for His greatness and honor it was found. He said, recounting from them, affirming that the previous words are evident in the soundness of the nature of all: "And we are among us" meaning, O jinn, "the righteous" meaning those deeply rooted in the attribute of righteousness which is a preparation for accepting all good.
And when the non-righteous may be corrupt by being directly engaged in corruption intending it, and they may be non-directly engaged in it, they said, being aware of the ranks of knowledge and actions that bring one closer or distance one: "And among us" and he built the context that was initiated by adding it to something established, so it was said: "less than" meaning a people in the lowest rank [of] "that" meaning this noble high description.
And when the non-righteous has many types according to their capacity for corruption or righteousness and their preparedness for it or distance from it, the good clarification of that is in their saying: "We were" or being is like the nature of "ways" meaning those of many paths and directions, and they referred to the paths as a sign of their strong attachment to them.
And when the separation may occur with the slightest thing, it was clarified that it is on the highest of aspects, so he referred to them as the same as the disconnected and described them with it, saying: "divisions" meaning (different factions) whose desires are divided, the plural of division which is the faction of people whose desires are contrary to their own, from the division [and] it is the cutting that causes great separation, like the cuts that sever from the skin, so that each faction becomes [distinct] in its own way. Al-Hasan and Al-Suddi said: disbelievers and Muslims, Rafidah and Mu'tazilah, Murjiah and others like the factions of mankind.
