Commentary

The Surah of the Jinn, and it is called "Say, It has been revealed." Its purpose is to show the honor of this noble Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, and that he and his companions and his descendants, the people of his household, have had their hearts softened by him, both of humans and jinn and others. He became the possessor of the hearts of those who are similar and others, and this is due to the greatness of this Qur'an and the subtlety of what it contains of strange matters. This is while the time is at its end, and the time of his remaining among his people is less than a quarter of a tenth of the time of Noah, may peace be upon him, the first Prophet whom Allah, the Exalted, sent to the disbelievers, and only a few from his people believed with him. This is indicated by its naming after the jinn, and by reflecting on the verse that includes that and what is in it of subtle pathways. May Allah protect us by His grace and generosity from falling into destruction. 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, He sent His Messenger, the Seal, with guidance to make it prevail over all religion by what He has of majesty and beauty. The Most Gracious, who, by His general mercy, encompassed this sending to clarify what is obligatory for creation from words and actions. The Most Merciful, who has specifically favored those who have been chosen from the people of the call with good deeds for what they have previously attained of victory in the eternal past.

And when Noah, may blessings and peace be upon him, was the first Messenger sent by Allah, the Exalted, to the disbelievers among the people of the earth, and his people were idol worshippers, and they disobeyed him with the utmost disobedience, even though he was one of them by lineage and language, his Surah was concluded with his supplication against them. Our Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, is the Seal of the Prophets, so he is the last Messenger sent by Allah, the Exalted, to the people of the earth and others from all of creation. His people, the Arabs, agreed with the people of Noah, may peace be upon him, in most of their conditions of idol worship, until those idols were either by their names or by their forms, as has been reported in the news. And in their disobedience to their Messenger and the weakening of his followers and their mocking, this began. This is due to the ease with which those who heard this final, comprehensive call from outside their kind, let alone those who are similar in kind, responded, despite the shortness of time and the weakness of supporters for the majesty of this Qur'an. He said, warning him of the matter regarding what is in this of great worth, with a reference to reproaching the Arabs for their delay in responding to what they know of its guidance in its meaning and structure, as it is in their language and they are of the type of the caller and his tribe and the closest people to him. "Say," meaning, O Muhammad, to your people.

And when the intended purpose is to glorify what has been revealed, and as for the one who reveals to each of the two messengers, it is one. He built for the action his saying, clarifying the nature of the jinn in their receiving this Qur'an by taking it as an inheritance from the noblest of the prophets, and their conveying it to others among the heirs of knowledge from them, so that they may have two honors: the honor of knowledge for the perfection of their own selves, and the teaching for the completion of others. Thus, they will have the same reward as those who act upon what they conveyed to him and dictated to him: "It has been revealed to me" meaning I have been informed in a manner of secrecy by one who knows the unseen other than Him in this Qur'an, the miraculous nature of which necessitated that I be the most followed of the prophets through the tongue of Gabriel, blessings and peace be upon him, who is His trustworthy one and the intermediary between Him and His prophets. Then he placed the position of the action, whose doer has not been named, in his saying: "that he" meaning the great affair "listened" meaning with utmost attentiveness and acceptance, and the true listening is indeed the listening to my recitation of this Qur'an. "A group" are in utmost eagerness by nature and disposition "from the jinn" who are in utmost concealment, and they are living, rational, light bodies that are dominated by the fiery or airy nature, just as the earthly bodies of humans are dominated by the dust nature. The group is between three and ten. Al-Baghawi said: They were nine from the jinn of Nasibin, and it was said: they were seven. In this statement, there is evidence that he, blessings and peace be upon him, did not see them nor recite to them, but rather their presence coincided with his recitation. And is this listening the one mentioned in Al-Ahqaf or another? Abu Hayyan said: It is well-known that it is the same, and it was said: it is different. The jinn who came to him in Makkah were the jinn of Nasibin, and those who came to him in Nakhlah were the jinn of Nineveh. And the surah they listened to, according to Ikrimah, is Al-Alaq, and it was said: Ar-Rahman. And it is not mentioned here nor in Al-Ahqaf that he saw them, and it appears from the hadith that there are multiple occurrences, some of which were at the beginning and no one from the companions, may Allah be pleased with them, was with him, as in the hadith of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, which is in the Sahih.

They lost him, blessings and peace be upon him, one night from the nights. They searched for him in the valleys and the ravines. When morning came, he came from the direction of Hira and said: The caller of the jinn came to me, and I went with him and recited the Quran to them. He took us and showed us their traces and the traces of their fires. Among them was Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with him, who went with him to Al-Hajun near the ravine, and he marked a line and said: Do not go beyond it. Then, similar to the stones, they descended upon him, dragging the stones with their feet until they overwhelmed him, so I could not see him. He gestured to me with his hand to sit, and he recited the Quran. His voice continued to rise, and they disappeared into the ground until I could not see them.

And Imam Abu Ja'far ibn al-Zubair said: Due to the previous mention of the state of the disbelievers of Quraysh in their blindness to reflection and their persistence in obstinacy and stubbornness as contained in Surah N and Al-Qalam, then it was followed by their warning in Al-Haaqqa, then by its affirmation and the nearness of its occurrence in Al-Ma'arij, then by his consolation, blessings and peace be upon him, and his comforting them with the story of Noah, blessings and peace be upon him, with his people. This was followed by what the successful one can take admonition from and know that the hearts are in the hand of Allah: The response of the obstinate Quraysh and the Arabs was closer in outward appearance to a prophet from among themselves and their own kind, for they had previously recognized his truthfulness and trustworthiness. Then he came to them with a book in their own language, which they use to converse, and in their tongue, which they speak. His signs dazzled the minds, and his proofs and miracles were clear to every person with a sound heart. They knew that they could not oppose him due to what they witnessed of the great proofs. Yet, despite that, they were blind and deaf - may Allah be angry with them and curse them - and those who were not of their kind preceded in faith, and they did not have the merit of being honored. They are the jinn, among whom there were those who were favored by Allah with goodness, so they believed and affirmed. And he, blessings and peace be upon him, commanded to inform about that, so Allah, the Exalted, revealed to him: 'Say, It has been revealed to me that a group of jinn listened...' The verses continue to his informing about the jinn and their other brothers regarding what they witnessed of the obstinacy of the disbelievers of the Arabs, 'And when Abdullah stood calling to Him, they were almost upon him in a mass.' Then the verses continued, intertwining meanings and supporting structures until the end of the surah - it has ended.
