Commentary

And when he mentioned his supplication at all times while they turned away, this was despairing and necessitated ceasing from the supplication. Even if the supplication was found after that at a great distance from him, with its being all-encompassing in all situations as it encompassed all times, he expressed it with a tool of delay to indicate the distance of the states, saying: ﴿Then﴾. And he confirmed, similar to what has passed, that their mere inclination towards their supplication after that is hardly believable, let alone their abundance of it. He said: ﴿Indeed, I called them﴾ [meaning] to faith and to renounce the devil.

And when the public calling was one of the types of supplication, he established it [with it] as a source, saying: ﴿Openly﴾, meaning revealing in the grandeur of the voice and generalizing for their community, both the noble and the lowly, and being sincere in that and continuing [with it] until my sight nearly became weary from the intensity of addressing them and turning towards them without hiding from them or waiting for them, rather suddenly. And I repeated that to them until I extracted [what was with them] of the response, and I did not cease at blocking their ears and covering themselves with their garments.
