Commentary
And when he was ﷺ the longest-lived of the prophets, and his advice to them and his trial with them had been prolonged, he indicated that with his saying, beginning: ﴿He said﴾, calling upon the One who sent him, for he realized that there was no one close to him other than Him. He omitted the tool of calling, as is the custom of those who are near, and said: ﴿My Lord﴾. And since the custom is that repetition must have an effect, even if little, their opposition to that is something worthy of doubt. He said, confirming, to express his sorrow and anguish over their persistence in their denial, a complaint about his condition to Allah, the Exalted, and seeking His help and asking for guidance to what he does with his utmost effort, and a reminder to those who recount this to them. And although the addressed, glorified is He, is aware of the secret and the hidden: ﴿Indeed, I have called﴾, meaning I have made the supplication to Allah, glorified and exalted is He, with wisdom and good advice. ﴿My people﴾, meaning those who are deserving of my response due to their knowledge of me and their closeness to me, in them is the strength of the attempt for what they desire.
And since he had encompassed all times with supplication, he said: ﴿By night and by day﴾, thus expressing continuity.
