Commentary
And when man is a place of deficiency, he does not cease from sin, and nothing benefits him except the end of generosity. He indicated this, encouraging them so that they do not despair and perish, by saying in response to the command: ﴿He will forgive you﴾, meaning as an act of generosity from Him, and kindness.
And when there are sins that do not necessarily require forgiveness, which are those after Islam, he said: ﴿Of your sins﴾, meaning those that preceded faith from polytheism and disobedience, and those that followed faith from the minor sins, which Allah has favored with the promise of expiation by avoiding the major sins. This is what He, glorified and exalted is He, has obligated upon Himself, with the promise that does not change. As for other than polytheism, it is subject to His will, glorified and exalted is He.
And when man, due to what predominates over him from forgetfulness and being preoccupied with hopes, turns away from death as a doubter or even a denier of it, He reminded them, frightening them gently, so that they may realize that they are in His grasp and withdraw from what angers Him, glorified and exalted is He. He said, indicating that a long life in disobedience - even if it is accompanied by a comfortable life - is nothing, threatening that He is capable of destruction at any time: ﴿And He may delay you﴾, meaning a delay that benefits you. And know that all matters have been decreed, and He has completed their regulation for the encompassing knowledge and power, so nothing is added to them or taken away from them. This is so that it is known that sending is merely a manifestation of what is in existence, and it should not be assumed that it shapes the realities by changing what has already been decreed regarding obedience or disobedience. He said: ﴿To an appointed time﴾, meaning that which Allah has named and known before your creation, so nothing is added to it or taken away from it. Thus, your death will typically be scattered, otherwise He would have taken you all with the punishment of annihilation. This is from the knowledge of what cannot be if it were to be how it would be. And that is because He knew that if they obeyed Noah, blessings and peace be upon him, their death would be as usual, otherwise they would perish as one soul. And He knew that they would not obey him, and that their death would only be by the punishment of annihilation.
And when man is inclined towards vain desires, he might sometimes say out of obstinacy or otherwise: Why does He not make us immortal? He said, confirming this due to the necessity of the situation for him: ﴿Indeed, the appointed time of Allah﴾, meaning that which has all perfection, and there is no repelling His command. ﴿When it comes, it will not be delayed﴾. As for before its coming, perhaps supplications, acts of worship, and good deeds may occur in it, preventing distractions and enhancing life. So hasten to the coming of the appointed time with faith, for when it comes, you will not be able to make up for it, and faith will not benefit you after seeing.
And when one who knows this with certainty knows that if it is revealed to him at the time of gargling, he would prefer to delay in order to repent when there is no delay, he would do good deeds out of fear of missing his time and the necessity of his being condemned. He alerted to this by saying: "If you only knew," meaning if knowledge or its renewal were at some time in your instincts, you would have understood your Messenger's warning that Allah does what He wills, and that the appointed time is certainly coming. So you would have acted for salvation, but you act in being engrossed in desires like one who doubts death.
