Commentary

And when leaving what He warned them of regarding disbelief does not benefit them except that they believe, and since faith must be sincere regarding the consequences of the warning because it is not valid except with the abandonment of all types of disbelief, the essence of the warning is in His saying: ﴿Worship Allah﴾, that is, the greatest King who possesses all perfection. This is by making your devotion sincere to Him, for His self-sufficiency prevents Him from accepting any worship that involves associating partners with Him, and this is faith. ﴿And fear Him﴾ means make a barrier between you and His anger that prevents you from His punishment by refraining from all that He dislikes. So do not move a movement nor remain still except in His obedience, and this is the action that protects from all evil.

And when there is no way to know what pleases the King to adhere to and what angers Him to avoid except from Him, and there is no access to that except through His special ones, and there is no special one like His Messenger whom He entrusted with His secret, He said: ﴿And obey Me﴾, meaning I will inform you of what your minds fall short of regarding the attributes of your deity, your religion, your worldly matters, and your Hereafter. I will guide you to acquiring manners that will guide you and to avoiding doubts that will lead you to ruin. So in my obedience, there is no judgment that pleases the King about you, and this is Islam. This call has combined faith, Islam, and action, and these are the foundations upon which the causes of success revolve.
