Commentary
And when the messengers, blessings and peace be upon them, do not say or do anything except what is in the interest of the religion, he explained his supplication by saying and confirmed it to show his certainty in believing what was revealed to him from the meaning of His saying, the Most High: ﴿Indeed, none will believe from your people except for the one who has believed﴾ [Hud: 36]. And if that is outside of the norm: ﴿Indeed, You﴾ meaning, O Lord, ﴿If You leave them﴾ meaning, You leave them in whatever state they are in, keeping them safe on the surface of the earth while they are upon disbelief and misguidance and leading astray, even if it is a despicable state. ﴿They will mislead Your servants﴾ meaning those who have believed in Me and those who are born upon the sound nature.
And when it may be that a person is harmful and he has a beneficial child; he negated that by saying: ﴿And they will not give birth﴾ meaning if You have decreed their remaining in this world ﴿except a wicked one﴾ meaning one who deviates from everything that should be adhered to. He sufficed in it with the essence of the doer, indicating that whoever exceeds the limit or begins in something thereafter of continuing in misguidance, that becomes a habit for him. Therefore, he said: ﴿A disbeliever﴾ meaning one who is profoundly concealed in what must be shown of the signs of Allah, for Your saying, O Lord, does not fail at all. And it is apparent that this speech is not said except by revelation, as in the Surah of Hud, peace be upon him, from His saying, the Most High: ﴿Indeed, none will believe from your people except for the one who has believed﴾ [Hud: 36]. Thus, it would be upon this that even their young ones would be punished for what Allah knows of them if they were to reach maturity, not for what they have done, as he, blessings and peace be upon him, said regarding the children of the disbelievers, 'Allah knows best what they were doing.'
