Commentary
And when one hopes for a king, he acts in a way that pleases him. And whoever fears him avoids what angers him. He alerted them to this by alluding to the majesty that necessitates respect and the beauty of doing good in character. He made it clear to them with encouragement, hinting at intimidation. He said, beginning in response to one of them who asks: Is there anything left of your words? ﴿What﴾ meaning what will happen ﴿to you﴾ while you are ﴿not hoping﴾ meaning you are in a time when you are in a state of hope. And between the one who acts with respect and the one who initiates it by presenting it, for if he had delayed it, it would have been for 'respect.' He said: ﴿For Allah﴾ meaning the king who has all authority ﴿is respect﴾ meaning a reward that will honor you in it, even if it is little. For indeed, a little of it is more than much of others. And do not fear humiliation from Him due to punishment by knowing that there must be accountability after resurrection, where He rewards the obedient and punishes the disobedient, as is the habit of everyone with those under their authority. So honor His messengers by believing in them and acting, for whoever intends to honor someone, he honors him and magnifies him to reward him for that. For indeed, the reward is of the same kind as the action. And that is only through the knowledge of Allah regarding His majesty and beauty. The excellence in character is only through the knowledge of Allah, not through actions. Indeed, Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, preceded the people with something that settled in his heart. For through knowledge, actions are purified and statements are rectified. And the proper way to honor Him, glorified and exalted is He, is that you do not see any right of yours over Him, nor dispute with Him by choice. And His command and prohibition are magnified by not opposing them with a dry concession or excessive strictness or relying on the illusion of submission. And His judgment is magnified by not seeking any deviation from it nor defending it with knowledge. And there should not be any ulterior motive or reason for Him. And because the goal is to attain actions that are apparent causes, He expressed it with hope to reassure them that their actions are impactful. And He expressed it with desire in another verse [as a reminder] that there is no true cause except the mercy of Allah in the state of calling to that.
