Commentary
And when he informed that he is reaching a limit in calling to it, with no more to add, he did not leave any of the times or states without addressing them. This led to the clarification of what he said in his call, which is the cause of all happiness by removing harms and bringing about benefits. He said, presenting the request for forgiveness by repenting from disbelief, so that they may appear and be receptive to being adorned with religious virtues after being cleansed of base morals: ﴿So I said﴾, meaning in my supplication for them: ﴿Ask forgiveness from your Lord﴾, meaning seek from the Benefactor towards you, the Creator for you, the Planner of your affairs, to erase your sins in their essence and effects, by returning from the worship of others to sincerity in His worship.
And when he mentioned that he first appealed to them by stating that their return is possible, so that they do not say: 'Indeed, we have exceeded in sins, so we will not be accepted,' he informed them that seeking forgiveness is the door to entering the obedience of the Compeller. He confirmed this appeal with his words, justifying the command and its response by saying: 'He will forgive you,' emphasizing for their stopping: ﴿Indeed, He was﴾, meaning eternally and always and forever, ﴿Most Forgiving﴾, meaning characterized by the attribute of covering for whoever returns to Him in the most eloquent and highest manner. And when forgiveness occurs, it removes all harms.
