Commentary
(p-393) Imam Abu Ja'far ibn al-Zubair said: When the Surah Al-Haaqqa concluded with the most severe [warning] and the greatest of it, I followed with a response to the one who hastened it and distanced it, as it is what the obstinate and tested one resorts to. So He, the Exalted, said: ﴿A questioner asked about a punishment that is bound to happen﴾ [Al-Ma'arij: 1] until His saying ﴿Indeed, they see it as distant﴾ ﴿and We see it as near﴾ [Al-Ma'arij: 7]. Then He mentioned their state at that time ﴿The criminal wishes he could ransom himself from the punishment of that Day by his children﴾ [Al-Ma'arij: 11], then He followed with that which does not avail him [nor benefit him] ﴿Indeed, it is a blaze﴾ [Al-Ma'arij: 15]. Then the Surah concluded with the affirmation of the warning - and the most severe of threats ﴿So leave them to plunge and play﴾ [Al-Ma'arij: 42] until His saying ﴿That is the Day they were promised﴾ [Al-Ma'arij: 44]. That is the Day of Al-Haaqqa and the Day of Al-Qari'a - it has ended.
And when His being, the Exalted, with what has preceded in greatness, is a matter known by what He has of effects from this universe [and what is in it], and their distancing from what He informed of is a weak, feeble, and trivial matter that is hardly believable that anyone attempts to refute these matters which are as clear as the sun, with no concealment or confusion in them at all. He said, affirming: ﴿Indeed, they﴾ meaning the disbelievers who deny and hasten ﴿see it﴾ meaning that long Day or its punishment ﴿as distant﴾ meaning the time of its occurrence, because they see it as impossible or they act like those who distance it.
