Commentary
And when all of this is a consolation for the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, regarding their hastening him towards the punishment in mockery and denial, whether the greatness or the punishment is intended to be depicted, it caused him to say: ﴿So be patient﴾, meaning endure their harm and this will not cease from conveying to them. Indeed, you have approached the time of vengeance upon them, O opener, seal, whom I have not clarified to anyone what I have clarified on his tongue. Patience is the restraint of the self from what is disliked, whether in action or abstention. Its beauty lies in the tranquility of the outward through steadfastness and the inward through knowledge. ﴿A beautiful patience﴾ means that it is not mixed with anything of disturbance or heaviness, nor complaint or hastening. For indeed, their punishment and your victory over them is due to the greatness of the One who sent you. Therefore, it must occur because disparagement of it and denial of it is disparagement of Him. And this is before the command to fight.
