Commentary
And when their pouring forth to the idols was in a state of joy, it was informed that this is contrary to that. The mention of the idol and the depiction of the state of coming to it was nothing but mockery of them. So he said: ﴿Humble﴾ meaning broken and humble due to the humiliation and smallness that has befallen it. He added the mark of femininity as an increase in this meaning and an exaggeration in it by saying: ﴿Their eyes﴾.
And when its humility was constant, he expressed it with the noun. And since their humiliation increased at every moment, he expressed it with the present tense verb which indicates renewal and continuity. So he said: ﴿Will cover them﴾ meaning it will encompass them and burden them with every hardship and distress in the manner of hastening towards them. ﴿Humiliation﴾ is the opposite of what they were upon in this world, for whoever is honored in this world against the truth will be humiliated in the Hereafter. And whoever humbles himself for the truth in this world will be honored in the Hereafter.
And when he depicted it in this manner, he indicated that this is what the minds can grasp of its description and that it is greater than that. So he said: ﴿That﴾ meaning the matter which is at the highest level of greatness. ﴿The day they were﴾ meaning in the state of this world at the utmost of what can be in the warning.
And when the warning cannot be realized except if it is from the capable, and if it is thus, it is frightening and painful without mentioning who it is from. His saying: ﴿They are warned﴾ is built for the passive meaning that he renews for them the warning in this world at every moment, perhaps they will take heed and their hearts will soften so they may return from their arrogance. And this is the time of the punishment which they asked about at the beginning of the Surah. Indeed, it has returned as you see the end of it to the beginning of it in what manner of return. And its joint has been attached to its connector like the attachment of the singular to the collective - and Allah is the Guide to the right path.
