Commentary
And when it was established that He, glorified and exalted is He, has the ultimate and overwhelming greatness from the comprehensiveness of knowledge and the completeness of power, the reliance of the people of His party upon Him and their turning away from everything else resulted in His saying, as a threat to the opposers and a consolation for the supporters: ﴿So leave them﴾ meaning, leave them [even] in their worst conditions ﴿to engage﴾ meaning, to act in their sayings and actions, which have no perfection in them, but are like the actions of a menstruating woman in water, who does not place her foot in a spot that she knows will please her, for she is on the verge of either falling or drowning. ﴿And let them play﴾ meaning, to act like a player whose actions have no benefit except the wasting of time and the hindrance from what is important of great significance.
And when what Allah has promised regarding the conditions of the Hereafter must inevitably occur, it is as if it is approaching the human being while the human is striving with his effort towards it. For this reason, He expressed it with the form of mutual action and said: ﴿until they meet﴾. And since what befalls the disbelievers from it is greater, that day is as if it is specifically for them, so He said: ﴿the day of theirs which﴾. And since the warning - which is what has been reported as a threat to the one being warned - is piercing to the hearts when it is from the Able One without the need to mention the one being warned, the passive form is built in His saying: ﴿they are promised﴾. And it is the day of the unveiling of the cover, the first manifestation of which occurs at the time of gargling, and its end is the second blowing of the trumpet until each of the two groups enters their abode and place of stability, and the verse is abrogated by the verse of the sword.
