The angels ascend, meaning they are the strongest of creation and most capable of penetrating the layers, and they hasten in their ascent until they are greater than the flash of the fleeting lightning. And the spirit, meaning Gabriel, blessings and peace be upon him, is specified to honor him, or it is a creation that is greater than the angels. It is said that it is the spirit of the believing servant when he is taken. To Him, meaning the place of His conversation and the utmost that can be reached of elevation for His creatures, and it is connected to the ascent or to the occurrence of His saying: 'On a day,' meaning on one of your days, in which there is a human, fifty thousand. And it clarifies the difficulty in his ascent or in being in it if the resurrection is intended by saying: 'A year,' and he did not say: 'A year,' for example. It is permissible that this day is a condition for the punishment, and what is meant by it is the Day of Resurrection, and its length upon the disbeliever is considered by what befalls him of distress due to the severity of the fears upon him, as it has been reported that it is lightened for the believer until it is equivalent to one prayer. This has ended.

It has been narrated from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them, that the meaning is that if the one responsible for the reckoning were other than Allah, he would not finish it except in this measure. And He, glorified is He, finishes it in half a day from the days of this world. Mujahid, Al-Hakam, and Ikrimah said: It is the lifespan of the world from its beginning to its end, fifty thousand years. No one among you knows how much has passed and how much remains except Allah. And it has been mentioned in the Surah 'Alif Lam Sajda' what is beneficial here.
