Commentary

And when there is in asking an offering of the face and a breaking of the self that necessitates tenderness along with the protection of the self with blame, he preceded his saying: ﴿For the beggar﴾ meaning the one who is pretentious in asking for spending, who is seeking to beg. And when there are among the people those whose aspirations are noble and whose ranks are elevated above the depths of humiliation by the disgrace of asking, from the scarcity of those who turn to Allah for awareness and discernment of those, [he said]: ﴿and the deprived﴾ meaning the one who is self-restrained, who does not ask and is thought to be rich, and he has no wealth to suffice him, so he is burning with his fire in his night and day, and there is no refuge for him after his Lord, the Owner of his public and secret affairs, except for the outpouring of his tears in his humiliation and brokenness. And this is from Allah, the Exalted, an encouragement to look after those in need who have no means and who have become poor after being wealthy. And the righteous predecessors had the lead in this and similar matters. It was narrated from the adornment of the worshippers that when he died, black marks were found on his back when he was washed, as if they were stripes. They were astonished by them, and after some days, the widows said: There was a person who used to come to us at night with a water skin and a sack of flour on his back, and we have lost him [and we are in need]. So they realized that it was he and that those stripes were from that. It was narrated from Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, that a person saw him walking during his caliphate at night and followed him until he knew where he was heading. He did not cease, may Allah be pleased with him, until he came to the house of [the widows] and said: Do you have any water, or shall I fill it for you? So they gave him a jar, and he took it and went and filled it on his shoulder and brought it back to them. And the stories about them in this regard are very numerous and well-known.
