Commentary
Those who are entirely devoted with all of their hearts and outward appearances to their prayers, which are the most significant part of their religion and beneficial for them, not for others. This is indicated by the addition, and the intended meaning is the general category that includes all types, except that the main focus is the obligatory prayers. For this reason, it is expressed with the term indicating steadfastness in His saying: "perpetually engaged in them." This means they do not become lax about them nor do they detach from them, but they adhere to them in such a way that it is determined by this adherence that they are, at the time of being free from other matters, focused on them with continuous remembrance and preparation for their performance. This is because it is their connection to their Lord, from whom they have no good except through Him. They do not forget their shortcomings nor are they neglectful of His blessings. And it is enough that prayer is a blessing in its indication of salvation from this description that leads to the causes of the Fire. It is an act of worship that has conditions, pillars, parts, forms, and etiquettes, beginning with the takbir and concluding with the tasleem. It is divided into prayers that include bowing and prostration, and into prayers that include prostration without bowing, such as the prostration of gratitude and recitation, and into those that have neither bowing nor prostration, such as the funeral prayer.
