Commentary
And when it was said that a fool might say: If they had come to them while they were awake, they could have defended themselves! He said: ﴿Or do the people of the towns feel secure﴾ meaning: whether gathered or alone, for there is no difference to us in that. ﴿That Our punishment should come to them in the forenoon﴾ meaning: at their time of rest and the gathering of their strength and energy; and since being awake necessitates movement, he expressed it in the present tense in his saying: ﴿While they are playing﴾ meaning: their play is renewed little by little at that time, and in it is a rebuke to them in relation to their being like children in intellect, with no attention to anything other than play.
