And when they first attributed him to misguidance, which could be a mistake due to forgetfulness or something similar, he established for them the evidence that he was upon the truth. He informed them that nothing caused that except their explicit statement regarding what they had initially hinted at concerning misguidance through denial. So he said: ﴿So they denied him﴾, meaning: the elite and those who followed them; and when their denial of him resulted in Allah's confirmation for them by destroying them and saving him and those who believed in him, he said, prefacing his salvation with concern for him: ﴿So We saved him﴾ by what we have of greatness from all the people of the earth and from Our punishment with which We seized them: ﴿and those with him﴾, meaning: in the companionship of righteous deeds ﴿in the ark﴾, which is the ship that Allah favored the people with by teaching them how to build it to protect them from the flood. It was a sign and a great benefit for those who came after them. ﴿And We drowned﴾, meaning: by the flood, which is the water that covered the surface of the earth, leaving no place of it until it surrounded them. And the place of the implicit was shown as a connection of the action with the description, indicating that whoever acted with the messenger, he indeed acted with his sender, and he will reward him with what he deserves. So he said: ﴿Those who denied Our signs﴾, meaning: which are from the clear manifestations in a limit that has no ambiguity due to their greatness in relation to us. And the action of salvation here was transitive with the hamzah, which is the original in transitivity, and it was coupled with: 'those' because it is the most exclusive of the relative pronouns and the most explicit. When the story was repeated in Surah Yunus - peace be upon him - it was more fitting with the speech of the eloquent and more similar to the styles of the articulate to vary in expression. Thus, the intensification was included with what it contained of eloquence by conveying more care, suitable to what preceded of increased delegation in His saying: ﴿So gather your affair and your partners﴾ [Yunus: 71], and it was recited with: 'from', linking the branch to the branch, for 'from' is common between conjunction and condition, and it can also be applied to what does not have intellect, so that suited the situation. And there was added there in the description of the saved ones ﴿And We made them successors﴾ [Yunus: 73], looking to His saying - glorified and exalted is He - at the beginning of the surah: ﴿And We certainly destroyed the generations before you when they wronged﴾ [Yunus: 13]. Then He said: ﴿Then We made you successors in the earth after them to see how you would act﴾ [Yunus: 14]. So He hinted to them with destruction if they wronged, then He indicated to them - in the story of Noah - peace be upon him - that he informed them that the successors are the saved ones, whose mention and offspring remain, until He favored them with guidance to the response and had mercy on them with this noble prophet - blessings and peace be upon him - so it was decreed that they would not be destroyed.
And when the story was opened by their attribution of it to him as misguidance falsely, and this arises from the blindness of insight or sight, it was appropriate for the matter to be turned against them in the face of the truth. So he said, affirming his denial of that: "Indeed, they were"; meaning: due to what I created them from deviation, "a people blind"; meaning: they are imprinted in the blindness of the heart, despite their strength in what they attempt. This is firmly established for them, by what was indicated by an action without mentioning a doer. And the story was concluded in Yunus with his saying: "So look how was the end of the warners" [Yunus: 73] for his saying at the beginning: "If it has become heavy upon you my standing and my warning" [Yunus: 71]; meaning: my warning, because he knew that it had become heavy upon them, and if it had been good news, it would not have been difficult for them.
