Commentary
And when the bearer of this was merely distancing the idea that he would be distinguished by a virtue while he is one of them, as will come in other than this surah, he denied that upon them by saying: "Or are you amazed?" That is: Did you deny and are you amazed "that a messenger has come to you?" He included in "has come" the meaning of "has been sent down." Therefore, its connection is made with "upon". He said: "A reminder, a message from your Lord," that is: the Benefactor to you by bringing you into existence and nurturing you, sent down "upon a man," that is: complete in manhood, and he is such that you do not accuse him, for he is "one of you," due to your saying: "We have not heard of this" [Al-Mu'minun: 24], that is: the sending of a human "in our forefathers." [Al-Mu'minun: 24] "To warn you," so that you may beware of what he warns you of, "and to be conscious," that is: to place a barrier between you and what you are warned of, perhaps you may be saved, "and perhaps you may receive mercy," that is: and to be in a state when you meet Allah, like one who hopes for His mercy, that Allah may elevate him in both abodes.
