Commentary

And when that was completed, and the situation necessitated - along with the clear evidence established for the Oneness - that they should respond with affirmation, it was as if it were said: So what was their response? He said: ﴿The chiefs said﴾ meaning: the nobles whose greatness fills the eyes, and the eyes turn towards them in gatherings. And He did not describe them in this surah with disbelief because that would be more comforting; for this is the first surah in which such a thing is narrated in the arrangement of the Book. And those who believed in him absolutely were in comparison to those who did not believe in extreme scarcity. So how about when they are restricted by nobility! And He emphasized their blame as a comfort for this noble Prophet by mentioning their closeness to him in lineage by saying: ﴿from his people﴾. They contrasted his gentleness and manners with harshness, confirming what was included of the slander, for their condition is a denial of them. They said: ﴿Indeed, we see you﴾ meaning: each one of us believes with a conviction that is as certain as sight that you are ﴿in error﴾ meaning: in a mistake and straying from the truth, it is a condition surrounding you ﴿clear﴾ meaning: evident in itself until it seems that this appears to others.
