Then he caused to be a reason regarding what has passed of the matter of the Messenger and the nations, saying this to dispel the misconception of those who think that the matter has ended with what they were punished with in this world: "So We will surely ask". That is: by virtue of our greatness regarding the rebuke and reprimand of the disobedient and the honor and glorification of the obedient. He made clear the place of the implicit by generalizing, so he said: "those".
And when the blame was on the denial of the Messenger, not by virtue of him being a specific one, he based his saying for the passive form: "was sent to them". That is: they are the nations. Did they comply with our commands and refrain from our prohibitions as the Messengers commanded them or not? "And We will surely ask". That is: by our greatness. "The Messengers". That is: was there any discomfort in their hearts regarding what We sent them with, and did they convey it or not on the Day when you will be witnesses over the people regarding what you have known from my testimony in this Qur'an? "And the Messenger will be a witness over you" [Al-Baqarah: 143]. For indeed, we must bring you to life after death, then we will ask you on a Day when the secrets will be made manifest and the hidden thoughts will be uncovered - even if their concealment is strong - and We will show the actions and the words, and We will not leave anything of the states.
