Those who took [their religion] means that they made an effort contrary to what the natural intellect guided them to when it alerted them by the legal intellect that they took [their religion] after they obliterated its form and reality, just as clay is obliterated when you make it into pottery. So the religion became [a diversion], meaning: engaging in what causes one to be heedless and forgetful of all that is beneficial from the matters that are pleasing to the soul without considering the outcome. Thus, they were judged based on their actions because they did not take into account the rectification of the outcome.

And when he presented what is more conducive to gathering upon falsehood, which is against the purpose of the surah of gathering upon seriousness, and more conducive to heedlessness, and since heedlessness of good leads to the pursuit of pleasures and indulgence in desires - this was confirmed by his saying: [and play], meaning: turning towards what brings joy and occupies the present time with delusion. For this reason, he followed it with his saying: [and they were deceived] meaning: in doing that [by] the worldly life, meaning: by what is in it of transient pleasures, such as hoping for a long life, abundance in provision, and ease of living, until they became by that veiled from contemplating its meanings and from what Allah, the Exalted, called them to of turning away from it. They did not consider what is beyond it. And since their abandonment of His mercy - glorified is He - is eternal, the connector was dropped [so today] meaning: it resulted from that that on this day [We will forget them], meaning: We will leave them like the forgotten [as] they did to themselves by [forgetting] meaning: they left [the meeting of this day] and did not prepare for it its preparation. [And as] meaning: and just as [they were] by nature and disposition [in denial of Our signs] regarding what they have of greatness in relation to us [they deny] meaning: they reject while they know its reality because it is in the utmost clarity.
