Commentary
And when the call of the companions of Paradise came, when they experienced joy at entering it, to the companions of the Fire with what causes pain and distress, and it concluded with this mercy that gives hope to the deprived in what brings pleasure and increases goodness - it was informed that the companions of the Fire call out to the companions of Paradise when they are overwhelmed with grief at their entrance. However, it is in a manner that softens and brings tears. It was said that this indicates that they have everything that was negated from the people of Paradise at the end of the previous verse, which is fear and sorrow: ﴿And the companions of the Fire called out﴾ meaning: after they have settled ﴿to the companions of Paradise﴾ after He made them known to them and commanded Paradise to adorn itself, which was an increase in their torment. Then the call was explained, and it was said: ﴿Let some water be poured upon us﴾ meaning: because you are higher than us. So if you pour it, it will reach us. This is from the extreme suffering they are in, for between the Fire and Paradise are chasms that have no bottom, and it is impossible for anything from either abode to reach the other along with it.
And when the pouring involves descent, they said: ﴿Or﴾ meaning: or send down to us ﴿from what Allah has provided you﴾ meaning: the One who possesses absolute richness, from anything that is easy for you to send down. ﴿They said﴾ meaning: the companions of Paradise ﴿Indeed, Allah﴾ meaning: the One who possesses all greatness ﴿has forbidden them﴾ meaning: He has prevented them by those chasms and other barriers ﴿to the disbelievers﴾ meaning: those who conceal what the sound intellect and clear transmission have indicated to them.
