Commentary
And when their words to the people of Paradise with peace have preceded, it has been informed that they will speak to the people of the Fire with reproach and blame. So He said: "And called out," and He made the doer evident so that it would not be confused with the people of Paradise. He said: "The companions of Al-A'raf," meaning: the state is turning their faces towards the people of the Fire. "Men," meaning: from the people of the Fire. "They recognize them," meaning: by their features. As for their general recognition, it has preceded. However, He said here: "by their marks," because the Fire has consumed them and changed their features with their change due to fatness, darkness of faces, and the size of their bodies, and similar things. "They said," either in denial or as a question for reproach and scolding: "What has your gathering availed you?" meaning: for wealth and men. "And what were you arrogant with?" meaning: you renewed this attribute with them and always established it in the world, claiming that there is no one who can overpower you.
