Commentary
And when it was as if it was said: They have confessed, and confession - as it is said - is fairness. So will it benefit them? It was said: No way! Its place has passed with the passing of the abode of action, surely! (He said) that is: the one whom Allah has made their matter (to) enter (them) in nations, that is: in groups and factions, some of them being close to others; then he described them indicating with the feminine 'ta' on the weakness of their minds and said: 'Certainly, they have passed away.' And when there were in the past those who believed, he included the neighbor, and said: 'Before you.' And when the jinn were the original cause of temptation, he preceded them and said: 'From the jinn and mankind.' Then he mentioned the place of entry and said: 'In the Fire.'
And when the custom of companions was that they speak and when they gather they greet each other, the listener longed to know their state in that, so he said responding to him: 'Whenever a nation enters (the Fire), they curse their sister,' that is: the one close to them in religion and sect whose traces have been decreed and they have followed its guidance. The Jews curse the Jews and the Christians curse the Christians - and so on, and this continued among them until when they caught up, that is: they caught up and followed one another, some of them riding on others - as indicated by the merging (of sounds) - 'in it altogether.' There remained not from them a nation nor a single one from a nation. (Their last ones) said, that is: in time and status, they are the followers and the lowly: 'For the first ones,' that is: for their sake addressing Allah with the address of the sincere: 'Our Lord,' that is: the one who has never cut off His kindness to us in this world despite what we have done of responding to His kindness with wrongdoing. 'These,' that is: the first ones, 'have led us astray,' that is: because they were the first to establish misguidance. 'So give them,' that is: make them taste because of that, 'a punishment double,' that is: it will be equivalent to the punishment of others twice, because they went astray and led others astray, for they established misguidance. '(And whoever establishes a bad tradition, he will bear its burden and the burden of whoever acts upon it until the Day of Resurrection).' And from it: '(No soul is killed unjustly except for the son of Adam the first, a share of its blood),' because he was the first to establish killing. Then they confirmed the severity of the punishment by their saying: 'From the Fire.'
And when it was as if it was said: They have said something that has no basis, so how were they answered? It was said: (He said) that is: in response to them, 'For each one,' that is: from the previous and the latter, and the followed and the follower, 'is a double punishment,' even if the two punishments are not equal, for the followed one, even if he was the cause of the misguidance of the follower, the follower was also a cause for the continuation of the followed one in his misguidance and the severity of his persistence in it by strengthening him through following and supporting him by defending him. And when they were ignorant of their deserving the punishment for this reason, he said: 'But you do not know that.'
