Commentary

And when it was known that what they had become accustomed to and taken as a religion, they considered it a great matter to abandon it; because the devil whispers to them that it is an expansion in [the worldly life, and the expansion] in it is something that should be renounced, as many of the verses have called for - Allah, glorified and exalted is He, confirmed the permission in that by denouncing those who prohibited it. He said, denouncing them, to inform them that the praised renunciation is what is accompanied by a correct belief in the lawful and the unlawful. As for what is accompanied by altering something of the religion by declaring unlawful what is lawful or vice versa, it is blameworthy: "Say" denouncing and reproaching, "Who has prohibited the adornment of Allah?" meaning: the dominion which no one has authority over with Him, "which He has brought forth for His servants" meaning: so that they may enjoy it from clothing, minerals, and others.

And when He mentioned the garments which are a condition for the validity of worship in a manner that encompassed other than them from the mounts and others, He followed it with the foods and drinks. He said: "and the good things" meaning: from the lawful that is pleasurable, "from the provision" like the water and the livestock and similar things. And when the meaning of the denial was: He did not prohibit them by one whose prohibition is considered, but rather He made them lawful. And sometimes, there may be an extremist in religion who clings to the verses that repel from the world, trivializing its status completely, let alone the adornment and good provisions. He said, resuming the answer to one who says: For whom? "Say, they are" meaning: the adornment and the good things "for those who believe" and He expressed it with this phrase and did not say: and for others, as a reminder that they are primarily for them "in the worldly life". As for the disbelievers, they are followers of them in enjoying it, even if it is more for them, it is not exclusively for them and it is for those who believe "exclusively" meaning: no one shares with them in it. This is based on the reading of Nafi' with the raising, and the estimation based on the reading of others: while it is exclusive "on the Day of Resurrection". And in this is a confirmation of what has passed of its permissibility after confirmation and the removal of doubts, and a call for reflection on the distinction between the two stations to clarify that the renunciation that is commanded (p-390) is only in the heart, meaning that the world has no value to him nor does he turn to it nor is it his greatest concern. As for the fact that it is beneficial in what Allah has permitted in it, and it is belittled, not cared for, that is among the virtues.

And when this meaning is one of the subtleties of meanings and precious structures, He followed it - exalted is He - with His saying in response to one who says: This detail is extraordinary, so can anything else be detailed like this? "Thus" meaning: like this wonderful detail "We detail the verses" meaning: We clarify their rulings and distinguish some of the ambiguities from others "for a people who know" meaning: they have a capacity and receptiveness for knowledge so that they may reach the true belief and righteous deeds.
