Commentary
And when He commanded - glorified and exalted is He - with justice and with establishing the face at every mosque, He commanded them with what is appropriate at that establishment, from covering the private parts, which has been previously urged, and clarifying the disgrace of exposure and the bad effects of it, expressing it with the word 'adornment' to encourage it and permit it, and clarifying that it is not something to be avoided, due to His saying, blessings and peace be upon him: "Indeed, Allah loves when He bestows upon a servant His provision, that He sees the effect of His blessing upon him." Narrated by Ahmad, Al-Tirmidhi, and Ibn Mani' from Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him. He followed that with the greatest matter that should be considered by the son of Adam, which is justice in food and drink. He said, repeating the call for compassion and showing great concern, reminding them of the story of their father Adam, peace be upon him, which caused him to be expelled from Paradise, while he was Allah's chosen one, to intensify caution: "O children of Adam," meaning: those whom We adorned, and the devil deceived, then We protected them from his evil by what We blessed them with from the goodness of repentance and great desire. "Take your adornment," meaning: that which has been previously expressed as feathers for covering the private parts and for beautification when gathering for worship, "at every mosque." And this was emphasized by the fact that they had begun that the non-Hums would circumambulate naked.
And when He commanded with the covering of the outward with clothing, because the validity of the prayer is dependent on it, He commanded with the covering of the inward with food and drink, for the ability is typically dependent on it. He said: "And eat and drink." And this was made better by the fact that some of them would practice their religion during Hajj by restricting themselves in that.
And when He commanded with clothing and food, He prohibited transgression in them, saying: "And do not be extravagant" by placing anything from that in what is not the most deserving of it, even by exceeding the plate. [And from that is to follow the Sunnah in drinking, so it is easy; for the sediment settles in the vessel, and perhaps it would harm from drinking it. And for this reason, He prohibited breathing in the vessel, for perhaps it would become foul, and the soul would reject it. As for food, let him improve his vessel and fingers to attain blessings, and it is cleaner.] Then He justified that by saying: "Indeed, He does not love the extravagant." (p-388) Meaning: He does not honor them, and there is no doubt that whoever He does not love will not attain any good, and all evil will encompass him. Among the forms of extravagance is eating to fullness, and moderation is to limit oneself to one-third, as the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said.
(‘It is enough for the son of Adam to have a few bites that will keep his back straight. If it must be, then one third for food, one third for drink, and one third for breath.’) and (‘The son of Adam has not filled a vessel worse than his stomach.’) and (‘The disbeliever eats with seven intestines, while the believer eats with one intestine.’) This was narrated by al-Bukhari from Ibn Umar - may Allah be pleased with them both - The physicians say that the intestines are seven, so the meaning here is that the disbeliever eats to his fill, filling the seven intestines, while the believer eats for sustenance, eating in one intestine, which is one-seventh of his stomach. This is indicated by the saying about a few bites. If it is not so, then it is in two vessels and something, which is the third - and Allah knows best - The reason for the verse is that they would throw off their garments when they wanted to perform Tawaf, saying: ‘We will not perform Tawaf in the garments we have slept in,’ and they would strip off from them to strip away from sins, except for the Hums, which are the Quraysh and their descendants. They would not eat anything but basic food and would not eat fat. The Muslims said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! We are more deserving to do that.’ So it was revealed.
