Commentary
And when he, glorified and exalted is He, advanced to him ﷺ in the matter of warning and reminding with the Book, he advanced to his followers and commanded them to follow him and forbade them from following the people of misguidance and what their allies reveal to them of their embellishments. This was after he informed them that it is a reminder and that it is a cause for their elevation in status and the might of their authority. He said, turning to them with the glory of His majesty, "Follow," meaning: carry upon yourselves a great burden with seriousness and energy in following "what has been sent down to you," meaning: you have been specifically chosen for it over others, so be grateful for this blessing "from your Lord," meaning: the One who has always been gracious to you. "And do not follow," and perhaps he expressed this in the form of a command to indicate that what was without remedy is rather a slip and a type of negligence that is in the realm of pardon "from Him," meaning: from your Lord. "Allies," meaning: from those whom We have forbidden you from in the cattle, and We have clarified their harm to you from the devils of mankind and jinn, and their inability to suffice you, and that all matters belong to your Lord.
And when they had opposed in their following him the clear intellect and sound nature, and they had examples of that if they would remember, he said, alerting them to remember what they know of their actions: "Little," and he emphasized the minimization with the negating "what" and with the merging of the 't' of the verb form, saying: "what you remember," meaning: you are engaging yourselves in remembering what is ingrained in your original natures, for you are acknowledging that your Lord is the Lord of all things. Thus, all that you invoke besides Him is a created being, and you do not find in your minds, nor in your natures, nor in your practices anything that indicates in any way that a created being can be a partner to its Lord.
