And when this was said, the listener was eager for their response. So I answer with His saying: ﴿They said﴾ meaning: Adam and Hawwa - blessings and peace be upon them and the best greeting and honor. [The saying of the special ones regarding their hastening in repentance] ﴿Our Lord﴾ meaning: O You who is gracious to us and bestows blessings upon us ﴿We have wronged ourselves﴾ meaning: We have harmed ourselves by taking it out of the light of obedience into the darkness of disobedience. If You do not return us and accept our repentance, we will certainly remain sinful ﴿And if You do not forgive us﴾ meaning: erase what we have done in essence and effect ﴿and have mercy on us﴾ so that You elevate our ranks ﴿we will surely be among the losers﴾. The verse indicates that they hastened to stand in acknowledgment, and they named their sin - even though it was contrary to the first one; because it was due to forgetfulness as in (Ta-Ha) - a wrongdoing, as is the habit of the great ones in considering the small ones among them. And they did not argue as Iblis did. In this is an indication that the initiative to confess the sin is from the actions of the noble ones, as it is one of the high morals. And there is no equivalent to it in necessitating forgiveness and removing the distress, and that arguing is from the actions of the lowly and from the defects of morals and causes of anger that necessitate expulsion.
