Commentary
And when he informed them of some of his whisperings, he caused its translation to be that it is a descent from the peak of honor to the lowest point of disgrace and excess. He said: ﴿So he led them﴾ meaning: he brought them down from what they were in of high obedience [like what he did to himself with the disobedience that necessitated his descent from the abode of honor]. ﴿By deception﴾ meaning: with trickery and schemes until Adam forgot the covenant of his Lord. And His saying ﴿So when they tasted﴾ indicates the hastening of the recompense with the 'fa' (and), and the tasting which is the beginning of eating. ﴿The tree﴾ meaning: they found its taste. ﴿Became apparent﴾ meaning: it appeared to them. ﴿To them were exposed their private parts﴾ meaning: their nakedness which would distress them to be exposed. Their garments fell away from them, and each one saw what was concealed from the other’s nakedness. And that was the intent of the envious, so they felt shy at that point. ﴿And they began﴾ meaning: they started and approached. ﴿To sew for themselves﴾ meaning: they would connect with sewing. ﴿From the leaves of Paradise﴾ one leaf to another. ﴿And their Lord called to them﴾ meaning: the Benefactor towards them with His command and prohibition, and they did not do anything of that except in His sight. So He said, reproaching them for what they did and admonishing: O My two servants, ﴿Did I not forbid you﴾ meaning: did I not set for you a limit regarding what you were permitted to exceed? ﴿About that tree﴾ meaning: the one whose right was to keep away from it, which necessitated closeness to this noble place as a favor to you. ﴿And I say to you that the devil﴾ meaning: the one who was arrogant about prostrating out of envy for you, O Adam, and animosity towards you, so he was consumed (p-375) by My anger and was expelled and distanced from My mercy. ﴿To you﴾ meaning: to you and your wife and to all who branch from you and are attributed to you. ﴿An open enemy﴾ evident in enmity, coming to you from every place he can come from, openly and secretly and with cunning. So with the manifestation of his enmity, he is subtle in plotting with what I have empowered him to establish of means. For I have given him strength over [deceit, and I have given you strength over deceit and I have given you strength over] salvation, and I said to you: contend, for if you overcome him, then you are of My party, and if he overcomes you, then you are of his party along with what he has towards you of enmity. So the verse is a reminder that whoever goes astray is indeed a follower of his most hostile enemy, abandoning his closest allies.
