Commentary
And when Allah magnified the status of the Qur'an, the intended meaning was: 'So believe in it, you will succeed.' He then followed it with His saying: 'And when the Qur'an is recited,' meaning: this which is revealed to me. So be disciplined and humble, for it is the attribute of your Lord. 'So listen to it,' meaning: give it your ears, striving to avoid any distraction that would prevent you from hearing.
And when some of the scholars hear while they are speaking, he indicated that this book is of a higher status than to be attained by one who is preoccupied with the slightest distraction. He said: 'And be silent,' meaning: for contemplation and reflection, so that your hearts may become clear and you may know its reality, and you may know what is in it, and there will be no discomfort in your hearts from it. And when the apparent meaning of the verse is the obligation of listening to every reciter by everyone, He encouraged it to magnify its status, saying: 'So that perhaps you may receive mercy,' meaning: so that you may have hope that your Lord will honor you and do with you all that the merciful does with the one who is shown mercy.
