Commentary
And when it was established what He legislated regarding abstinence and the avoidance of excess and hardship, and it was informed that among their ignorance was their excessive questioning about the Hour, and the devils do not cease from misleading them, He informed him about the entirety of their excessive questioning in amazement at them and as a testimony to their persistence with the misleading of their devils. And he ﷺ commanded him with what he should respond to them, so he said, referring to: ﴿They extend it﴾ [Al-A'raf: 202] ﴿And if you do not bring them a sign﴾ meaning: according to their request ﴿They said, why﴾ meaning: why not ﴿did you not choose it﴾ and الجَبْيُ: gathering, and الإجباء: leaving it, and الاجتباء: earnestness in gathering, and it necessitates selection and choice. So the meaning of اجتَبَيْتَها is you brought it forth, meaning: you took the initiative from yourself to bring it as a chosen matter.
And when the situation called for a question in teaching the answer, I fulfill that with His saying: ﴿Say﴾ meaning: if they say that ﴿I only follow﴾ meaning: I deliberately and intentionally take on following ﴿what is revealed to me﴾ meaning: what the angel brings to me ﴿from my Lord﴾ meaning: the One who is gracious to me by teaching me what benefits me, not that I bring anything from myself nor do I propose anything to my Lord.
And when he confined his state to following the revelation, it was as if it was said: What is this that (p-208) is revealed to you? So he said - and it is permissible that this is an explanation for his following, as it is sufficient in proving his prophethood and is enough to negate the proposed signs -: ﴿This﴾ indicating what is revealed to him as a reminder that it must be present in all minds, present before the eyes of every person ﴿insights﴾ meaning: things that are - according to what you requested - chosen, rather they are the best of the best, by which the light of the heart is, and it also brings sight to the eyes, drawing them closer to what the Book urges to observe from the visible signs to knowledge that did not exist before that, and they are clear and compelling proofs for my truthfulness and the acceptance of all that I have brought, and He called it that because it is a cause for the insight of minds with the evidences of monotheism, prophethood, and the Hereafter, and all of the Shari'ah, both its foundations and branches. So it is a naming of the cause by the name of the effect, and it is upon me to praise it with His saying: ﴿from your Lord﴾ meaning: the One who has not ceased His grace upon you at all, so He is deserving that what comes from Him is received with all that is beautiful.
And when the insights are plural, and it is customary that the singular forms of the plural are varied, He affirmed it with what indicates that they are extraordinary in that they are equally at the highest levels of guidance, so He said: ﴿and guidance﴾ meaning: clarity; and when clarity may not be in the manner of honor, He said: ﴿and mercy﴾ meaning: honor. (p-209) And when it is possible for someone who does not benefit from something to deny the benefit of the beneficial thing concerning him, He said: ﴿for a people who believe﴾ meaning: they find this truth and continue to renew it at all times, and as for others, it may be a punishment upon them.
