Commentary
Then he caused to be the statement of the condition of the envious one with the envied ones regarding what he asked for delay because of it. He stated that he has fallen upon many of his desires and has led astray from him nations that have exceeded the limit and for whom the measure of counting has fallen short. Then he clarified that he is less than having any action, and that everything is in His hand - glorified and exalted is He - He is the one who made him an instrument for His desire from him and from them. And whoever Allah guides, he is the rightly guided, and whoever He leads astray, those are the losers. So he said: "Then the devil whispered" meaning: he cast into secrecy and adornment and repetition and desire. "To them both the devil" meaning: by what Allah has enabled him from that he flows in the human being like blood and casts into secrecy what inclines his heart towards what he wants. Then he clarified the reason for the whispering by saying: "To make evident" meaning: to show "to them what was concealed" meaning: was covered and hidden by being made as if it were behind them, not turning towards it "from them". And the construction is for the passive to indicate that the covering with something does not burden them in it as will come in his saying: "He removes from them their clothing" [Al-A'raf: 27] and "from their shameful parts" meaning: the places that they are grieved by their exposure. In this is that the revealing of the shame is a cause for distance from Paradise and that between them is negation of gathering and completeness of distinction.
And when he informed of the whispering and concealed its content, implying that it is a great matter and a long deception, he added to it his saying: "And he said" meaning: in his whispering also, meaning: he adorned for them what occurred because of it in their thoughts. This saying: "What has forbidden you both" and he reminded them with the description of kindness as a reminder of his honoring them as a portion for what he wants from them. So he said: "Your Lord" meaning: the one who is kind to you both by what you know of types of His kindness "from" meaning: what He has made your end in permissibility for Paradise exceeding "from this tree" combining between the indication and the name, an increase in care for specification. "Except that" meaning: the dislike of you both "become angels" meaning: in the absence of desire and in the ability to fly and to take forms and other than that from their characteristics "or become" meaning: by what will become for you both from the nature "of the eternal ones" meaning: those who do not die and are not expelled from Paradise at all.
