Commentary
And when he established their incapacity and that they are like them, it indicated to him and that they are beneath them by a method of denial and detailed amazement at some of what he negated about them. He said, advancing the feet because the first thing that is feared from a thing is its transition: "Do they have feet?" And when they had made for themselves artificial limbs, he clarified the intended meaning by his saying: "They walk with them."
And when what is feared after the transition is the extending of the hand, he said: "Or do they have hands?" That is: described as they "grasp with them," meaning a type of grasping; and when what is feared after the grasping with the hand is sight, fearing from the indication, he said: "Or do they have eyes?" That is: characterized by that they "see with them," meaning a kind of seeing; and when a person may fear what he intends to harm him, so it becomes hidden from him and he cannot reach it thereafter except by hearing, he concluded: "Or do they have ears?" That is: it is said about them that they "hear with them," meaning something from hearing.
And when he equated them with them and negated from them what had preceded, it necessitated their deficiency from them and that in reality it is taken away from them because they have nothing of themselves except non-existence, and the ability in what they can do is only in the hands of the Maker for them. He associated them with it, and he said, indicating to that, beginning: "Say" that is: to these polytheists "Invoke your partners" that is: those which have preceded and whatever you wish other than them, and seek help with them in my enmity.
And when this was a great challenge that is worthy of its doer to boast about, he alerted to it with a tool of relaxation and said: "Then plot against me" that is: all of you and they, and you are more numerous than the pebbles of the valley and the sand of the desert, and I alone. And when the meaning was: and hasten, he added with the conjunction of the cause his saying: "So do not give me respite" that is: do not delay me for a moment and what is above it so that you do not excuse yourselves in the delay with a reason. And he justified the lack of concern for their plotting with his saying, indicating the attribute of his deity with what he negated about their partners from encompassing the benefits of the two abodes in what relates to religions and bodies, and he presented religion as an indication that it is the most important. He said, affirming in response to their denial:
