Commentary

﴿And they are not able to help them﴾ meaning: for the polytheists who worship it. ﴿Support﴾ which is the assistance against the enemy. And perhaps he expressed it in the form of the rational being as an indication that if they were to understand, and with these despicable qualities, they are not worthy to be their beloveds, let alone for them to make them their lords. (p-193) And since one who does not support others may support himself, he negated that by saying: ﴿And they do not support themselves﴾ meaning: at a time when they are afflicted with harm, rather they worship them and defend them.
