Commentary

And when he mentioned His exaltation, glorified is He, he began to mention some of His attributes in words and indications that point to that. He establishes the evidence for the unsuitability of what they associated with Him for partnership due to its incapacity. This is because it is among His creation and has no ability to deserve any form of glorification. He said, denying those who worship them, indicating that the intended association is the true shirk, not what was mentioned regarding the story of Iblis in his causing the naming of 'Abd al-Harith and similar matters: ﴿Do they associate﴾ meaning: the polytheists and their offspring in worship ﴿that which creates nothing﴾ meaning: from the idols, the elements, the stars, and others ﴿anything﴾ meaning: that brings it into existence from non-existence as Allah does, whom they associated with Him.

And when it is necessary that that which creates nothing is created, because it cannot exist without a capable creator who brought it into being, he stated this in his saying, equating the idols with those of knowledge to place them in their status in belief and worship: ﴿and they﴾. And when the created cannot be a creator, he sufficed with the construction for the passive form and said: ﴿They are created﴾ meaning: the creation of their attributes and essences and similar things is renewed.
