It is as if it was said: So when He gave them righteous offspring in creation from males and females, they made the two types. For Him are partners, meaning: some of them are idols, some of them are fire, some of them are the sun, and some of them are other than that. This is according to the reading of the majority, and according to the reading of Nafi and Abu Bakr from Asim with a broken 'sh' and a silent 'r' and the tanween is understood as: those who associate partners. In what He gave them, meaning: of strength in worship and provision through vows and similar things. And when the polytheists did not harm anyone by their associating partners except themselves, this led to His saying: 'So exalted is Allah,' meaning: by what He has of attributes of perfection that are not for others, greatly exalted.
