Commentary
So when He gave them both, meaning: your parents Adam and Hawwa, a righteous child, meaning: the type of righteous offspring in complete creation, in body, strength, and intellect, they multiplied on the earth and spread in its regions, males and females. They made, meaning: the two types of their offspring, the males and the females; because 'righteous' is an attribute for a child and it is for the type, thus it includes both male and female, the few and the many. It is as if it was said: So when He gave them righteous offspring in creation from males and females, they made the two types. For Him are partners, meaning: some of them are idols, some of them are fire, some of them are the sun, and some of them are other than that. This is according to the reading of the majority, and according to the reading of Nafi and Abu Bakr from Asim with a broken 'sh' and a silent 'r' and the tanween is understood as: those who associate partners. In what He gave them, meaning: of strength in worship and provision through vows and similar things. And when the polytheists did not harm anyone by their associating partners except themselves, this led to His saying: 'So exalted is Allah,' meaning: by what He has of attributes of perfection that are not for others, greatly exalted. The evidence for the intention of the two types is His saying: 'from what they associate,' in the plural. And likewise what follows of the blame of idol worship.
