Commentary
And when it became obligatory for him what he mentioned of misfortune - his persistence in envy and the abundance of his words regarding his envied one - he turned to his envied one, who had not spoken a single word about him. Rather, he occupied himself with weeping over his sin and sufficed with the action of his Lord that would save him from the traps of his plotting that he set up by what he mentioned, so that this would be the cause of his happiness. He said, in reference to ﴿Get out of it﴾ [Al-A'raf: 18] ﴿And O Adam, dwell﴾. And when the intended meaning of this matter is himself, not a metaphor for someone who is associated with him, he affirmed his pronoun to correct the reference and remove the metaphor. It was said: ﴿You and your wife in Paradise﴾.
And when the context here is to recognize that He enabled our father in Paradise greater than His enabling us on earth by granting him in it abundant living, concurrent with his existence; then it was good in His saying: ﴿So eat﴾. The conjunction with the letter 'fa' indicates that the food was with the dwelling, it did not delay from him, and there is no contradiction between it and the expression with 'wa' in Al-Baqarah. For the meaning of 'fa' is a type included under the meaning of 'wa', and there is no contradiction between the type and the genus. And His saying: ﴿From wherever you wish﴾ means abundantly, that is, wide, for it indicates the permissibility of eating from everything in it except what is prohibited. As for the verse of Al-Baqarah, it indicates the permissibility of eating from it in any place. And this context to its end indicates that whoever opposes His command, glorified is He, his throne will be shaken and his honor will be destroyed, even if he is at the height of ability and the peak of strength, as He expelled those who greatly enabled him by the submission of His angels and the dwelling of His Paradise and the permissibility of everything in it except for one tree - He emphasized its prohibition by forbidding its approach, without being content with forbidding its consumption. He said: ﴿And do not approach﴾, meaning: in addition to not consuming ﴿this tree﴾, indicating a specific tree or its type. Then he caused that the approach leads to disobedience, for indeed whoever circles around the sanctuary is close to encountering it. He said: ﴿So you become﴾, meaning: because of approaching it ﴿among the wrongdoers﴾, meaning: by eating from it, which is the intended prohibition, so you would thereby be acting like one who walks in darkness.
