And when knowledge of the unseen is necessary for bringing good and repelling harm, and the Hour is the most precise knowledge of the unseen, He commanded him to deny this necessity, so the general will be negated, and with its negation, the specific will be negated. He prioritized benefit because it is more important to the soul, and there is nothing in the context that necessitates delaying it, unlike what is found in Surah Yunus, peace be upon him. He said, commanding the display of the humility of servitude: "Say, 'I do not possess'" meaning: at any time whatsoever "any benefit for myself" meaning: anything of bringing benefit, whether little or much, "nor harm" likewise. For my ability is limited and my knowledge is little, and everyone who is a servant is like this.
And when it is known, indeed observed, that every living being can harm and benefit, he made it known that this is only by Allah, so he said: "Except what Allah wills" meaning: the One to whom belongs all command, and no one else has the authority to enable me to do so.
And when he clarified to them by this that their questioning about the Hour and other matters of the unseen is ignorance from them; because his state is clear in that he does not know of that except what Allah has taught him, who has exclusive knowledge of the unseen, he indicated this by saying: "And if I were" meaning: from myself "to know the unseen" meaning: its essence "I would have certainly amassed" meaning: I would have found for myself much "of good" by attracting benefits by establishing its causes.
And when harm cannot be tolerated at all, he said: "And no harm has touched me" meaning: this essence by establishing barriers against it from me, because the necessary implication of encompassing knowledge is the completeness of ability, as will be established, if Allah wills, in Surah Taha. And when he clarified that knowledge of the unseen is a rank of divinity, he concluded the verse by stating his rank, saying, refuting what they claimed about him of madness due to what became clear by his saying: "O children of Abdul Manaf! Fear Allah, O children of so-and-so, O children of so-and-so." Likewise, what was necessitated by their obligation upon him of knowledge of the Hour, that he would be a deity: "I am only" and when the Surah is for warning, he presented it, saying: "a warner" meaning: absolutely for the disbeliever to turn away from his disbelief, and for the believer to remain steadfast in his faith, "and a bearer of good news for a people who believe" meaning: specifically, or both descriptions are specifically for them regarding benefit. As for what has no benefit in it, it is non-existence.
