ثُمَّ لَأٓتِيَنَّهُم مِّنۢ بَيۡنِ أَيۡدِيهِمۡ وَمِنۡ خَلۡفِهِمۡ وَعَنۡ أَيۡمَٰنِهِمۡ وَعَن شَمَآئِلِهِمۡۖ وَلَا تَجِدُ أَكۡثَرَهُمۡ شَٰكِرِينَ ١٧ ﴿17
17Then I will come upon them from their front side and from their behind, and from their right and from their left. You will not find most of them grateful.

Commentary

And when he had established himself in that with utmost seriousness, he acts in it with whispering - with himself and those who obey him from the devils of jinn and mankind - in a manner that exceeds the limit and incapacitates the powers. He indicated to him with a letter of delay, saying emphatically: ﴿Then I will surely come to them﴾ meaning: a coming that I must do, beginning from ﴿before them﴾ meaning: confronting them, so I will compel them to do what they know is wrong, and ﴿from behind them﴾ meaning: by surprise, so they will do what is corrupt to the utmost degree of corruption, and they will have no awareness of any of its corruption when they engage in it. Thus, I will guide them to engage in something like it while they are unaware. ﴿And from﴾ meaning: and bypassing the direction that is ﴿to their right﴾ towards them, ﴿and from﴾ meaning: and bypassing what is ﴿to their left﴾ meaning: deceptively, so they will do it while it is ambiguous to them. These are the directions from which it is possible to come. Perhaps the benefit of (from) indicating the bypassing is to connect the steps of the front and back so that his coming encompasses all the surrounding directions. [And the four directions have understood his deception and trickery in what they know with true knowledge and what they know nothing of, and what is ambiguous to them, whether slightly or greatly. They are those whose mention has been omitted above, that he has no ability to come from them so that his matter does not become confused with the angels. And when the accursed one resolved on this with sincere determination and saw its causes facilitated from the delays and the like, he thought that by what he saw of desires and pleasures, he would attain most of his needs. So he said, adding to his estimation: 'So I will surely mislead them, and they will surely follow me: ﴿And you will not find most of them﴾ as is the habit of most in wickedness ﴿grateful﴾. Thus, what was intended by him was misery, and he drowned in envy. If good were intended for the miserable one, he would have replaced envy with admiration.

[So he sought] to ascend to their high ranks through weeping, regret, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong, and giving sincere advice, in submission to the station of Lordship and humility before His great status.
