And when they recounted this saying to be a deterrent for the sinners, they did not return. He informed that their suspicion was true regarding the occurrence of both matters together: the severe punishment and destruction. He said: ﴿So when they forgot what they had been reminded of﴾ meaning: they acted in their turning away from it like those who forget and left it as if it were forgotten; and that Allah does not neglect them just as a person cannot neglect anyone under his hand, to do as he wishes without objection. ﴿We saved﴾ meaning: by Our greatness ﴿those who forbade﴾ meaning: they continued in forbidding ﴿from evil﴾ meaning: the forbidden ﴿And We seized﴾ meaning: a seizing of dominance and overpowering ﴿those who wronged﴾ meaning: by transgressing on the Sabbath ﴿with a wretched punishment﴾ meaning: very severe ﴿because they were﴾ meaning: by nature and disposition ﴿rebellious﴾ meaning: because of their persistence in renewing rebellion.
