Commentary
And when what He, the Most High, has arranged in the course of these stories regarding the jewels of the attributes of this noble Prophet was completed, urging towards belief in him and making it obligatory in a manner understood from it that he is the Messenger of Allah to every accountable person, whether their time has preceded or followed; He commanded him, glorified and exalted is He, to declare what had previously been hinted at, and to clarify what he took the covenant of the messengers upon him, affirming the universality of his message and the comprehensiveness of his call. So He said: ﴿Say﴾ and brought the tool of distance because it is its place ﴿O mankind﴾. It has been mentioned in Al-An'am that their derivation is from the essence of humanity, and that Imam Al-Subki said that this necessitates the inclusion of the jinn and angels among them. It has been previously mentioned at ﴿And do not deprive people of their due﴾ [Al-A'raf: 85] in this surah what benefits here ﴿Indeed, I am the Messenger of Allah﴾ meaning: the one who possesses all of the dominion ﴿to you all﴾ meaning: there is no difference between those who reached me and those who came after me or preceded me, in that all are required to have faith in me and to follow me; and this is what is meant by his saying, blessings and peace be upon him, in what has been narrated by Al-Bukhari and others from Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, when the arm was raised to him and he bit from it, he said: 'I am the master of mankind on the Day of Resurrection.' And in Al-Darimi's Musnad from Jabir, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: 'I am the leader of the messengers and there is no pride in that, and I am the seal of the prophets and there is no pride in that, and I am the first to intercede and the first to have intercession granted and there is no pride in that.' And in the chapters of virtues from Al-Tirmidhi from Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: 'I am the first of the people to emerge when they are resurrected, and I am their leader when they arrive, and I am their speaker when they listen, and I am their intercessor when they are held back, and I am their giver of glad tidings when they despair, the banner of praise will be in my hand on that day, and I am the most honorable of the children of Adam before my Lord and there is no pride in that.' He said: This is a good and strange hadith, and also in the chapters of virtues from Ubayy ibn Ka'b, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: 'On the Day of Resurrection, I will be the Imam of the prophets, their speaker, and the possessor of their intercession without pride.' He said: This is a good and authentic strange hadith; and from Al-Tirmidhi and Al-Darimi from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them, that the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: 'Indeed! I am the beloved of Allah and there is no pride in that, and I am the bearer of the banner of praise on the Day of Resurrection under which Adam and those below him will be, and there is no pride in that, and I am the first to intercede and the first to have intercession granted on the Day of Resurrection and there is no pride in that, and I am the most honorable of the first and the last and there is no pride in that.' And Al-Tirmidhi said: This is good - from Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: 'I am the master of the children of Adam on the Day of Resurrection and there is no pride in that, and in my hand is the banner of praise and there is no pride in that, and there is no prophet on that day, Adam or anyone else, except that they will be under my banner.' Pride is the claim of greatness, arrogance, and honor, meaning: I do not say it boastfully, but rather in gratitude and as a reminder of the blessing; and whenever they gathered with him in a gathering, he would be their leader before his death and after it. He gathered with them on the night of Al-Isra in Al-Aqsa Mosque and led them in prayer, then he gathered with them in the heavens and led all the inhabitants of the heavens in prayer. As for on the Day of the Greatest Gathering and the Greatest Distress, all will turn to him and believe in the message, and none of the elders will turn to one another except with their knowledge that the conclusion will be with him.
So that it may be clearer for the acknowledgment of His trustworthiness and the submission to His obedience. This is because the one who refers to another is indeed referring to that thing. If someone from before 'Isa, blessings and peace be upon him, referred to his ways, it is a possibility. The fact is that he, blessings and peace be upon him, manifests in that situation his message to all of creation. Thus, the secret of this verse ﴿Those who follow the Messenger﴾ [Al-A'raf: 157] becomes evident, and Allah is the Grantor of success.
And when it was indicated by the addition to the name of the Essence that denotes all attributes regarding the universality of His call and the comprehensiveness of His message, even to the jinn and angels, this was supported by His saying: ﴿To whom belongs﴾ meaning: Alone ﴿the dominion of the heavens and the earth﴾ meaning: It is not surprising that He sends him to all who are in them, and indeed to what is in them.
And when it is possible that in the kingdom of a king there might be someone who contests him or comes close to him, such as a crown prince or the like, it may be that he rejects some of his matters in the form of advice or otherwise. He negated that by saying, clarifying the completeness of His dominion: ﴿There is no deity except Him﴾ meaning: All are submissive to His command and humbled before Him. This is because there is no existent, either in reality or in potentiality, who is worthy of divinity besides Him. Then He justified that by saying: ﴿He gives life and causes death﴾ meaning: These two attributes are exclusively His. Whoever possesses such is unique in what has been mentioned. If you refer to what will come, if Allah, the Most High wills, at the beginning of Al-Furqan along with what has passed in the early parts of Al-An'am, there will remain no doubt in the entry of the angels, peace be upon them, into the general call.
And when it was established that there is no rival to Him, this resulted in the direction of the command to submit to His Messenger. He said: ﴿So believe in Allah﴾ meaning: For what has been established for Him of greatness and encompassing attributes of perfection and of everything; for indeed, belief in Him is a foundation upon which nothing from the religion is built except upon it.
And when the closest of the original branches to Him is the message, He said: ﴿And His Messenger﴾ meaning: Because He is His Messenger. Then He described him with what indicates his closeness by saying: ﴿The Prophet﴾ meaning: The one who informs him of what he wants from the great matters, both unseen and witnessed, and elevates him above every created being by informing him of His sending. And when his elevation above every scholar is evident, even though he then learns from a human, this is the clearest evidence of his truthfulness. He said: ﴿The unlettered﴾ meaning: The one who, despite not being proficient in writing or reading, is upon the original pure nature that has not been mixed with desire, nor has it been tarnished by fortune or passion, such that he is sought for guidance and emulation due to what he possesses of knowledge of this world and the Hereafter and the embodiment of the attributes of perfection.
And when he indicated by this description that the cause of faith is salvation from desires by being upon the original fitrah, he said, alerting to the obligation of believing in him, as he is the first doer of what he calls to: ﴿He who believes in Allah﴾ meaning: for the sake of what His essence, glorified and exalted is He, necessitates of worshiping Him due to His greatness. So, whenever knowledge of His essence is renewed according to His advancement in the ranks of perfection from a complete rank to a more complete one to that which has no end, his faith is renewed according to it, without any lapse or distraction or any trace of slackness. ﴿And His words﴾ likewise, whenever knowledge of a quality from them is renewed, faith in it is renewed. Among them are the miracles that occurred at his hands, each one of them is a word; because his appearance by the word, as 'Isa, blessings and peace be upon him, named it a word for that reason.
And when it was established that he complied with what he was commanded, his prophethood was confirmed. He deserved to be a role model, so he said: ﴿And follow him﴾ meaning: in all that he says and does, whether it is something he forbids or commands or permits. ﴿So that you may be guided﴾ meaning: so that your state may be like that of one who is hoped for the attainment of what he asked for in the opening chapter from guidance, meaning: the creation of guidance in the heart along with its continuity.
