Commentary
And when he became silent, it means he stopped. He likened anger to a speaker who was urging Musa, peace be upon him, and inciting him to what it necessitates and requires. So when his fury was relieved, he calmed down and ceased his words, and the opposite of it followed, which is pleasure. As for Musa, the anger is the boiling of the heart due to what harms the soul. He took the tablets, meaning those that came from Allah after he had thrown them. And while he was in their copy, meaning the matter written in them, it is an action meaning a form of doing. And from Ibn Abbas, when he threw them, he fasted - similar to how he had fasted for the supplication - for another forty days, and they were returned to him in two tablets instead of what had broken. Guidance is something that clarifies the objectives. And mercy is a cause for honor for those who are for their Lord, meaning not for others. They fear, meaning they are worthy of fearing with a great fear that tears the hearts and necessitates fleeing, and they continue in that.
Explanation of what is in these verses from the saying: ﴿I will show you the abode of the wicked﴾ [Al-A'raf: 145] from the wonders of the Torah. The translator said in the fifth book of it after he reprimanded them for some of what they did that necessitated for them anger and punishment by being lost and urged them to adhere to the command of Allah to support them: 'As for the commandments that I command you today, preserve them and act upon them so that you may live and multiply and inherit the land which Allah has sworn to your forefathers. So remember all the way which your Lord Allah has led you in, and He has dealt with you for forty years in the wilderness to humble you and test you and to know what is in your hearts, whether you would keep His commandments or not. So He humbled you and caused you to hunger and fed you with manna which you did not know, nor did your forefathers know, to make it clear to you that man does not live by bread alone, but rather by what comes out of the mouth of Allah. And your clothes did not wear out upon you, nor did your feet swell for forty years. Preserve the commandments of Allah your Lord and walk in His ways and fear Him; for Allah your Lord is the One who will bring you into the goodly land, a land of many rivers and springs and fountains that flow in the deserts and mountains, a land of wheat and barley, in it are vineyards and fig trees and pomegranates and olives and oil and honey, a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity, and you will lack nothing in it, a land whose stones are iron, and from its mountains you will mine copper. So keep yourselves, do not forget Allah your Lord, and keep His commandments and His laws which I command you today. Do not become arrogant; when you eat and are satisfied and build goodly houses and dwell in them, and your herds and cattle multiply, and your silver and gold multiply, then your heart will become proud and you will forget Allah your Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of bondage and led you through the great and terrible wilderness, where there were fiery serpents and scorpions and where there was no water; He brought forth water for you out of the flinty rock; and fed you manna which your forefathers did not know, to humble you and test you and to do you good in the end. And do not say in your hearts, 'My power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth for myself.' But remember Allah your Lord, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your forefathers. And if you forget Allah your Lord and follow other gods and serve them and worship them, I testify against you today that you shall surely perish, as the nations which Allah destroys before you, so shall you perish, because you would not be obedient to the voice of Allah your Lord. Hear, O Children of Israel! But you are crossing today the Jordan River and going in to possess nations greater and mightier than yourselves, and cities great and fortified up to heaven, and a people great and tall, the descendants of the giants; and you have heard and known that no man is able to stand before the giants. And you know this day that Allah your Lord goes before you as a consuming fire; He will destroy them and bring them down before you, so that you may drive them out and destroy them quickly, as Allah has said to you. And do not say in your hearts, 'The Lord has brought us in to possess this land because of our righteousness'; for it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is driving them out before you, and that He may perform the word which the Lord swore to your forefathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. Therefore understand that it is not because of your righteousness that Allah gives you this good land to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people. Remember, and do not forget how you provoked Allah your Lord to wrath in the wilderness; from the day that you departed from the land of Egypt until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against Allah. And at Horeb you provoked Allah to wrath, and Allah was angry with you to have destroyed you. When I went up into the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant which Allah made with you, then I stayed in the mountain forty days and forty nights; I neither ate bread nor drank water. And Allah gave me two tablets of stone written with the finger of Allah, and on them were all the words which Allah had spoken to you on the mountain from the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly. And it came to pass, at the end of forty days and forty nights, that Allah gave me the two tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant. Then Allah said to me, 'Arise, go down quickly from here; for your people whom you brought out of Egypt have corrupted themselves; they have quickly turned aside from the way which I commanded them; they have made themselves a molded image.' Furthermore, Allah spoke to me, saying, 'I have seen this people, and indeed, it is a stiff-necked people. Let Me alone, that I may destroy them and blot out their name from under heaven; and I will make of you a nation mightier and greater than they.' So I turned and came down from the mountain, and the mountain burned with fire; and the two tablets were in my hands. And I looked, and behold, you had sinned against Allah your Lord; you had made for yourselves a molded calf; you had turned aside quickly from the way which Allah had commanded you. And I took the two tablets and threw them out of my two hands and broke them before your eyes. And I fell down before Allah, as at the first, forty days and forty nights; I neither ate bread nor drank water because of all your sin which you committed in doing wickedly in the sight of Allah, to provoke Him to anger. For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure with which Allah was angry with you to destroy you. But Allah listened to me at that time also. And Allah was very angry with Aaron and would have destroyed him; so I prayed for Aaron also at the same time. Then I took your sin, the calf which you had made, and burned it with fire and crushed it and ground it very small until it was as fine as dust; and I threw its dust into the brook that descended from the mountain. Also, at Taberah and Massah and Kibroth Hattaavah you provoked Allah to wrath. And when Allah sent you from Kadesh Barnea, saying, 'Go up and possess the land which I have given you,' then you rebelled against the command of Allah your God, and you did not believe Him nor obey His voice. You have been rebellious against Allah since the day that I knew you. Thus I prostrated before Allah forty days and forty nights, because Allah had said He would destroy you. Therefore I prayed to Allah, saying, 'O Lord, do not destroy Your people and Your inheritance whom You have redeemed through Your greatness, whom You have brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand. Remember Your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; do not look on the stubbornness of this people or on their wickedness or their sin, lest the land from which You brought us should say, 'Because Allah was not able to bring them to the land which He promised them, and because He hated them, He has brought them out to kill them in the wilderness.' Yet they are Your people and Your inheritance whom You brought out by Your mighty power and by Your outstretched arm.' Then Allah said to me, 'Cut for yourself two tablets of stone like the first ones, and come up to Me on the mountain, and make yourself an ark of wood. And I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke; and you shall put them in the ark.' So I made an ark of acacia wood, and cut two tablets of stone like the first ones, and went up the mountain, having the two tablets in my hand. And He wrote on the tablets according to the first writing, the Ten Commandments which Allah had spoken to you in the mountain from the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly. And Allah gave them to me. Then I turned and came down from the mountain and put the tablets in the ark which I had made; and there they are, just as Allah commanded me. Now the children of Israel journeyed from the wells of Bene Jaakan to Moseroth; there Aaron died, and there he was buried. Then Eleazar his son ministered as priest in his stead. From there they journeyed to Gudgodah, and from Gudgodah to Jotbathah, a land of rivers of water. At that time, Allah separated the tribe of Levi to bear the ark of the covenant of Allah, to stand before Allah to minister to Him and to bless in His name, to this day. Therefore Levi has no portion nor inheritance with his brethren; Allah is his inheritance, just as Allah your God said to him. I stood between Allah and you at that time, to declare to you the word of Allah; for you were afraid because of the fire, and you did not go up the mountain. He said: 'I am Allah your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or on the earth beneath, or in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, Allah your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.' You shall not take the name of Allah your God in vain, for Allah will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain. Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as Allah your God commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of Allah your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your ox, nor your donkey, nor any of your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. And remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and Allah your God brought you out from there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm. Therefore Allah your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day. Honor your father and your mother, as Allah your God has commanded you, that your days may be long and that it may be well with you in the land which Allah your God is giving you. You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife; and you shall not desire your neighbor's house, his field, his male servant, his female servant, his ox, his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's.' These words Allah spoke to all your assembly in the mountain from the midst of the fire, the cloud, and the thick darkness, with a loud voice; and He added no more. And He wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me. And it came to pass, when you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, that you came near to me, all the heads of your tribes and your elders. And you said: 'Surely Allah our God has shown us His glory and His greatness, and we have heard His voice from the midst of the fire. We have seen this day that Allah speaks with man; yet he still lives. Now therefore, why should we die? For this great fire will consume us; if we hear the voice of Allah our God anymore, then we shall die. For who is there of all flesh who has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived? You go near and hear all that Allah our God may say, and tell us all that Allah our God says to you, and we will hear and do it.' Then Allah heard the voice of your words when you spoke to me, and Allah said to me: 'I have heard the voice of the words of this people which they have spoken to you. They are right in all that they have spoken. Oh, that they had such a heart in them that they would fear Me and always keep all My commandments, that it might be well with them and with their children forever! Go and say to them,
'And We certainly settled the Children of Israel in a good settlement.' [Yunus: 93] In it, there is from the ambiguous the saying: 'the hand of Allah' and 'the finger of Allah.' The first is because it is not permissible to use it in our Shari'ah - it is interpreted as speech, and the second as power.
