Commentary

And when it became clear to him what is appropriate for the position of his noble brother, that he did not fall short in calling them to Allah nor did he weaken in forbidding them from misguidance, and he saw that what appeared of anger was frightening to his people and a deterrent for them from what they had committed, he made a supplication for himself along with the acknowledgment of his inability and that no one can do anything except for forgiveness. And Allah, glorified and exalted is He, conveyed that in the form of a response to a question by saying: "He said, My Lord," meaning: O You who are gracious to me, "forgive me," meaning: what my anger has led me to do against my brother, "and my brother," meaning: in that he has not yet reached what I wanted from him in their struggle.

And when he called for the removal of the shortcoming, he followed it with honor by saying: "And admit us," meaning: I and my brother and all who have joined us, "into Your mercy," to be encompassing for us and surrounding us; and when the estimation was: for You are the best of those who forgive, he added to it: "and You are the most merciful of the merciful," meaning: because You bestow blessings that cannot be counted by the diligent nor can they be enumerated without any benefit reaching You nor harm befalling You by doing so or by leaving it.
