Commentary

So know - glorified is He - that He has decreed for him to be given respite. However, not for what he intended, nor as a response to him. But this is how it was decreed in the past in His judgment in His ancient knowledge. And to this, the expression guides by His saying: ﴿He said, 'Indeed, you are among those given respite.'﴾ That is, in general. And He prevented him from protection from death by His saying, as mentioned in two Surahs: (Al-Hijr) and (Sad), 'Until the Day of the appointed time.' This is the time of the first blowing, in which the living will die, and he will die with them. The omission of this statement in this Surah is because this Surah is for warning, and the ambiguity of the matter is more intense in that. And He granted him respite while he intends by it corruption; because his matter does not exceed it and his estimation by it. And because He - glorified and exalted is He - is not to be questioned about what He does, and so that His wisdom may manifest in reward and punishment.
